Countdown to tour

July 16th
  • Please arrive in good time on Tuesday for the rehearsal - school is open from 6pm
  • Updated itinerary - below
  • Revised list of music - make sure you practice your parts as there is little time for rehearsal on each item
  • Note instruments arrival time BACK in the UK, 7- 8pm Tuesday 2nd August.  If you can't collect them at that time from Bluecoat, let Margaret know now.
July 9th 2006
  • Add instruments and weights to list of those going on the van.
  • Payment due for opera and wine tasting before departure - see Margaret.
  • Next rehearsals: Tuesday 18th July 6.30 - 9.30 pm, Wednesday 19th July 6.30 - 9.30 pm - arrive ready for a prompt start.
  • Ensure you have the right concert clothes - check details (below) or with Margaret if unsure.  Men may wear regular white shirts for concert dress.
  • Make sure you've got your instrument insured!
  • Make sure you've got European health insurance - you can do it very easily online here.
  • Plan your packing!  Note the luggage allowances and stick to them (20 kg NEMA or 15 kg Stanstead).  Hand luggage allowances are weight AND size (see 'Flights').
  • Margaret will not be coming to Italy.  Tour leader will be Gill, supported by Nicola.
July 2006
  • Note dress code!  Formal and 'outside' dress required (see below).
  • Make sure you bring some currency.  Italy is an expensive country, and there are not loads of cash points around.  Budget for at least €50 per day.  (Also, be security conscious - a money belt is a useful item to wear UNDER clothing).  You can buy Euros at the aiport, although you might get favourable rates elsewhere beforehand.
  • Let Kate Brown know if you'd like to play on the party night!
  • Those with instruments on the van - the van is leaving on Thursday and will return to Bluecoat on Tuesday evening, time to be confirmed.  You can either collect them then or later by arrangement.
June 2006
  • Inform Margaret of contact details of friends/relatives going on the tour.
  • SIGN UP NOW! for excursions - Wine Tasting, Opera trip, Verona day out etc (see below for details).
  • BBC2 Sunday 11 June 2006 9 pm 'Francesco's Italy'.  A new series about Italy starts this week with a visit to the north, including the area of the Veneto (which is where we are going).
May 2006
  • Pay the balance of the tour cost to Bill
  • Make sure you have an E111/European Health Insurance Card
  • Check which flight you are on
  • Check your instrument case size/weight if you are unsure whether it is hand luggage or van.

Local amenities and Italy information

The old town of Garda is lovely - 10 minutes walk away, with little streets down to the lake.  There are lakeside walks, swimming, and access to the ferry and the rest of the lake.  Lots of shops and restaurants.

Getting around:

The local ferries run very frequently and are quite cheap, so it is very easy to visit other towns by boat – Malcesine is superb and has a cable car up the mountain (Monte Baldo) with glorious views on a clear day.
