Nottingham Symphonic Winds Celebrate Twenty Years in Style (November 05, 2007)
Nottingham's Albert Hall was the venue on Saturday 3rd November for Nottingham Symphonic Winds' celebration of twenty years of music making.
During the course of the day players past and present gathered to play together and catch up on old times. More than 500 musicians have played with the group at some time so it represents an important part of many lives over the course of its existence.
Co founder and previous conductor Alistair Parnell was on hand to greet ex players and in the afternoon all joined forces for a play through some old favourite repertoire.

The afternoon was an opportunity for ex players to bring their instruments, and play some old favourites,
and catch up with old friends
The evening concert started with a selection from the current NSWO with conductor Keiron Anderson. His choice of repertoire showed the range and skills of the group to excellent effect with Nigel Clarke's Samurai providing a dramatic start to the programme, followed by the delicate and melodic Danceries by Kenneth Hesketh. The band then showed its ability to further change colour and style with an exuberant performance of a Count Basie medley.

Claire Franklin then conducted sister group Nottingham Wind Ensemble (NWE) in a delightful programme including 'Lillie Theme' by Joseph Horowitz, Derek Bourgeois' 'Serenade' and 'At The Castle' from Alan Street's Nott'm Town. The NWE really rose to the occasion with some fine ensemble playing.
The final part of the concert was a trip down memory lane for players and audience alike, providing a chance to reflect on some of the amazing achievements and poignant memories shared by everyone. The musical choices of the final part of the programme provided a fitting tribute to the group and some significant moments in the past. Guest singers Simon Theobald and Paul Jackson also contributed some fine and moving performances.

The evening drew to a close with the acknowledgment of a number of individuals who have made significant contributions over the twenty year history of the group. Co-founders Margaret Frogson and David Oldershaw were particularly honoured for their role not only in starting the group but continuing to provide the drive and inspiration for its continued success. The Sheriff of Nottingham was in attendance to present special awards to long standing members and friends, including Penny and Keith Harding, Jo Simpson, Kay and Bill Brown and Alistair Parnell.

The musical finale was provided by Alistair with his touching rendition of Bill Whelan's 'Lament'. He then led NSWO through a rousing version of 'Riverdance' to bring the evening to a close.
This was memorable occasion for all, reflecting some tremendous achievements but also showcasing the talents of the current groups - providing great promise for the group's future success.
