On Saturday 7th June 2008 Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra played to a virtually full house in the huge space of Derby Cathedral.  The setting was perfect for an evening of classical music, held in aid of Derbyshire Childrens’ Holiday Centre.

The audience, which included the Mayor of Derby and the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, were welcomed by organiser Frank Troughton.

For the first part of the evening, conductor Keiron Anderson directed the orchestra in a lively and varied programme of classics, including the Rimsky Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles, Rimsky Korsakov and Night on a Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky.  Kate Brown on clarinet gave a subtle and musical performance of Weber’s Concertino, made all the more poignant by the family connection for the evening – Kate is granddaughter of concert organiser Frank Troughton.  Highlights of the second half of the concert included Percy Grainger’s Children’s March, Elgar’s Nimrod and a blistering performance of Holst Second Suite in F.

A rewarding evening for orchestra and audience, the full house helped to ensure that the wonderful work of the Derbyshire Childrens’ Holiday Centre also benefited from the proceeds of the evening.
