Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra at Lakeside: Evening Post Review (July 15, 2008)
evening post

Review:  Peter Palmer

This orchestra was already an accomplished ensemble before Keiron Anderson became their director. But he appears to have lifted them to a new level.

Their high-precision performance of Shostakovich's Festive Overture was worth Saturday's admission price alone. Capped by its poetic flute solo, Mussorgsky's Night on a Bare Mountain fared equally well.

There were Viennese confections in the shape of the Light Cavalry and Fledermaus overtures. The Suppe piece drew glittering playing from brass and horns.

North and South America yielded a dance suite by Robert Russell Bennett and an artful concert tango by Astor Piazzolla. We also heard Pirates of the Caribbean, an exuberant march (John T. Williams) and Spirit of the Sequoia (Philip Sparke).

Extracts from John Cranko's ballet Pineapple Poll provided the mercurial finale.
