More than 650 children and adults were treated to a Christmas spectacular at the Albert Hall in Nottingham on the morning of the 21st December 2008. Not only was Santa on hand as special guest but the morning was a tribute to many popular shows and musicals.
Nottingham Symphonic Winds with Alistair Parnell, guest conductor and compere for the morning, presented a Christmas spectacular that had the audience involved from the very start.
Some fine playing from the 80-strong group of musicians set the standard for an entertaining programme of music. After some warm ups (audience and band!) members of the audience were invited to partipicate by performing favourite numbers from the shows - there was a brave Maria singing ''The Hills are Alive', a Joseph singing 'Any Dream Will Do', some fabulous Mamma Mias; and groups of children singing numbers from High School Musical, the Sound of Music, and Oliver! Some fantastic performers were then incorporated into a seamless 'production', complete with staging and props.
Alistair Parnell's engaging presence ensured all members of the family were able to enjoy the concert, helped along by inviting younger children to sit in the main auditorium close to the band, so they were fully involved throughout. The brave solo performers were given lots of encouragement and surprised themselves with their performances.
After such a magical morning of musical entertainment, next year's concert will no doubt be already included in the Christmas calendar for many Nottingham families.
