Great Way to Bid City Farewell
Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra
Lakeside Theatre
Until last week nobody knew this would be Eric L Hinton's last city appearance as music director of Nottingham Symphonic Winds. But his native America is calling him. During his five years at the helm the ensemble have gained from his great technical know-how. He has also given them a varied and high-level repertoire. Sunday's programme was typical, because the playing caught the character and mood of each piece.
There was ample contrast in Milhaud's Suite Francaise, the harmony of Alsace-Lorraine sounding especially striking. Before movements from Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, the prelude to Gustav Holst's Hammersmith did for the Thames what Wagner's Ring did for the Rhine. Later, Nicola Pennill played a lyrical solo part in Eric Coate's seldom aired SaxoRhapsody. Sarah Jones' oboe and David Sadler's trumpet cut the vivid central figures in Copland's Quiet City. Also from across the pond were a Cole Porter Suite and a set of Old American Dances. Richard Goodman was the popular trombonist in Garner's Misty.
