NSWO Percussion Section Have a Lot of Bottle (July 05, 2006)
The NSWO concert at the Albert Hall on Saturday 1st July was one in which the percussion section featured highly. Not only were there prominent drum solos in 'Sing, Sing, Sing' and the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto (both ably performed by Jon Oldershaw), but also the section were asked to play some unusual instruments.
David Bedford's 'Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves' is notable for its challenges for percussion, including the use of bottles tuned with varying quantities of water, to create some of the effects required. Much experimentation was needed to identify just the right bottles required for the task!
The occasion was a poignant one for the section as it was the last concert for long standing member and section leader Tony Garton. His colleagues were sad to see him go, and he'll be greatly missed by the group for his quiet professionalism and electrifying xylophone playing.
